No land for 2-BHK scheme in Hyderabad?

2 bhkHYDERABAD: The Hyderabad district administration’s plan to implement the double-bedroom housing scheme has hit a roadblock due to non-availability of land in the district.
Responding to chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s announcement of building a lakh 2-BHK flats after the TRS won a landslide victory in the civic polls, thousands of aspirants made a beeline to the Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district collectorates and submitted petitions seeking houses.
Over 40,000 applications were received (between November and February) by the Hyderabad district administration, while their Ranga Reddy counterparts received nearly 1.11 lakh applications. However, the Hyderabad district administration has made a plea to aspirants not to visit the Hyderabad collectorate until the government issues guidelines. However, the officials were accepting the applications during `Mee Kosam’ programme every Monday so that aspirants are not left dejected.
According to revenue records, there is only 66-acre litigation-free government land in 16 mandals in the district.
“After the chief minister gave instructions to the Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district collectors on identifying land to construct 2BHK flats, the Hyderabad district administration has prepared a report on land av ailability in its jurisdiction.
According to the report there is nearly 300 acre land (scattered) available in 68 parcels in 16 mandals, of which only 66 acres are litigation-free,” sources in the Hyderabad collectorate told STOI.
Apart from 40,000 appli cations, nearly 1.7 lakh applications were lying with the district administration for nearly a decade seeking shel ter under various housing schemes. “Of the 1.7 lakh applications, we have provided shelter to nearly 20,000 beneficiaries under the Rajiv Gruha Kalpa (RGK) scheme,” the official said.
When contacted, Hyderabad collector Rahul Bojja said, “As there is no open land in the district, we have identified 26 notified slum areas to fulfil the government’s assurance. The construction of 2-BHK flats will be taken up in a phased manner and completed in three years. Applications for 2-BHK houses will be accepted after conduct of `ward sabhas’. Clarity on whether the Hyderabad district administration or Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will organise the ward sabhas will emerge soon.”
